The Cortez Seafood & Cocktail

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

The Cortez Seafood and Cocktail is an oasis nestled in the heart of Raleigh’s Glenwood South neighborhood. A neon blue sign hangs over the stylish patio illuminated by string lights and dotted with shady umbrellas and luscious plants. We walk through the outdoor dining space and are seated inside at a comfy turquoise half-booth. An elegant marble bar top lines the other side of the dining room, which is surrounded by abundant greenery and colorful wallpaper.

Beyond their contemporary tropical aesthetic, The Cortez is frequently lauded as one of the Triangle’s best restaurants and for good reason. Executive Chef Oscar Diaz is a multi-time James Beard best chef semifinalist for the Southeast, most recently in 2022. Chef Diaz combines his Mexican American heritage with fresh North Carolina seafood to produce delicious oysters and shareable plates.

We split the bright and spicy seasonal ceviche, chargrilled oysters, and brussels sprouts sauteed in bulgogi glaze, garlic, and chili flakes. All three dishes were delicious, but the highlight of our visit was definitely their homemade churros with dulce de leche sauce, topped with poppy seed vanilla ice cream and edible flowers. The Cortez also has a fantastic cocktail program, featuring a well-crafted selection of tropical drinks.

The Glenwood South establishment recently opened a sister bar, CUYA, on the floor above their restaurant. The cocktail bar and music garden serve the quality drinks you’ve come to expect from the team behind The Cortez in a lively environment featuring custom-built terrariums, stylish decor, small snacks, and music from local DJs.
